VERSE: See that blue-eyed girl with the light coloured skin?/Well i bet you wouldn't know it, but she is an Indian/Her dad is European and her mom is Cree/And she can tell you all about her Native ancestry/And although she's Native, no-one sees/They ridicule and call her half-breed!!
CHORUS: But she's a Metis girl, a strong proud Metis girl/And she is beautiful, yes beautiful/
She's a Metis girl, with bloodlines from two worlds/And she is beautiful, that light skinned Metis girl/
VERSE: Now that Metis girl used to have sad eyes/She was haunted by rejection, she was criticised/Then one day an elder came along and gave her a gift/She acknowledged her and told her this:
CHORUS: You're a Metis girl, a strong proud Metis girl/And you are beautiful, yes beautiful/
You're a Metis girl, with bloodlines from two worlds/And you are beautiful, a light skinned Metis Girl/
CHORUS OUT
STORY BEHIND THE SONG: I was in Vancouver about 2 Aboriginal Day celebrations ago, performing outdoors at the Robson Museum. After the show, a woman who identified herself as being Metis approached me. We talked for awhile, and she told me a little bit about what it was like for her to be a Metis woman. She asked me if i would write a song for her about Metis women. I told her that i write all my songs based on experience or on matters that are close to my heart, and that i believed my songwriting approach was the reason that people felt moved by my songs.
I told that woman that i would write a Metis woman song, if lyrics and melody came through me. And waddya know...lyrics and melody came through me.
"Metis Girl" was created because of a woman who shared her lifestory with me and asked me to write a song about it. She loved my PRETTYBROWN song very much. It is my hope that "Metis Girl" will soothe the spirits of all my beautiful Metis sisters everywhere, get them standing tall like the proud women they are, and also get that NATIVE blood which runs through their veins PUMPING strong like a warcry from all of our ancestors who came before us.
Now everytime someone sings this song they will actually be sending out validation, acknowledgement, and good medicine to ALL OF OUR METIS GIRLS OUT THERE!!!!
All my relations!
